For all intents and purposes, we appear to be heading towards the end of traditional journalism. As seismic shifts continue to rock the journalism industry, however, news applications seem destined to grow for the foreseeable future.
Tapestry Media seeks to create custom news applications that go against the traditional news app paradigm. Instead of summarizing news based on sources or topics, we instead focus on specific audiences, places or topic clusters. We have three primary applications: Qwiklit Short Story Reader, Omniwire News and Pomelo Global News Reader.
Qwiklit
Qwiklit is the result of years of pushing a specific mandate: to promote short fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction from independent publishers and emerging writers. Qwiklit's curated list of publications and authors opens up our audience to hundreds of new pieces every day. Tapestry Media hopes to continue growing Qwiklit's audience to bring high quality literature to the masses.
Omniwire
With most major news outlets centered in cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Toronto, it has become increasingly difficult to see what's really happening in the rest of North America. I believe that local news has the power to inform us about what people really need. Telling the stories of our fellow brethren is, in my opinion, far more important than latest political scandal or geopolitical sabre-rattling.
Omniwire is a news aggregator with a clear focus on local news. The aggregated sources were all picked manually and don't rely on an algorithm that may normally prioritize larger publications, meaning you get ground-level information from all over the United States and Canada.
Both the United States and Canada are insurmountably gigantic. To be able to capture news from all provinces, states and territories requires both time and dedication that many lack. With that in mind, Omniwire includes a functional news map that lets you explore local news through an mapping interface. This innovative design is a great way to track regional trends and to understand the priorities of different communities.
Pomelo Global News Reader
Pomelo Global News Reader is the logical continuation of what Tapestry Media started with Omniwire. Using regionally-specific search queries, Pomelo aggregates news from over a thousand different cities, states, provinces and countries around the world. With this application, we hope to draw attention to underrepresented peoples and groups.
